    Sold My G8: What Next?

Trying to take advantage of the insane used car market, I sold my '08 G8 GT last week for $18K. I was hoping to get $15K out of it in a normal used car market, but cranked it up to $18K and got full value. It had 88K miles on it, was never raced, not driven winters, and only had a CAI and exhaust on it. I took great care of it. I'll miss it, but I wanted to move it before the market changed, and while it still had under 100K miles.

So I'm debating on what to buy next, when the market cools off some. I don't want to pay inflated prices right now, unless something amazing comes along. Here's what I'm looking at:

    Audi S7
    BMW M5
    Chevy SS
    Caddy CTS-V

My base requirements are no more than $50K, less than 60K miles, and it has to have 4 doors. I've got two other coupes that I drive, this needs to be more of a family car.

My favorite for sure is the S7. I love the looks and drove one a few months ago. Bang for the buck would be the Chevy SS, as it's basically my G8 all over again, but I don't love the body style. However, there's one close to me here in Ohio with just 6K miles, as opposed to the 50K+ miles I'd see on the S7. The M5 is harder to find, and the Caddy CTS-V seems to be out of my price range, but you never know.

I'm interested to see what the masses think on these choices.

Of those, I’d do the M5

I used to hate Dodge. In a month or so, I'll own three FCA vehicles.

I've been pretty happy with my gen 2 V...

Easy to get to mid 600s at the tires...

Very clean Gen 2 V would be within your price range and miles. If hunting for a blue one as pictured, don't hold your breath but they do come up from time to time so be ready to go buy if that does. Higher mileage V3s exist but I think even one with less than 60k miles will still fetch right at your max or a little higher. On the SS, I agree its mostly the same as your G8 so pass on that IMO. M5 - if you have a stellar warranty sure but I wouldn't touch it if you're on the hook for repairs.

I'm also targeting only white cars. That's my thing. Maybe if an unbelievable deal came up on a silver car, I'd look at that, but I really want white. I'm throwing the SS in there only because there are some around me that are very close to new with low miles, and that would be like having a new car. Also keep in mind I'd only put maybe 5K a year on this car. I have a winter car, plus two other Mustangs (2003 Cobra / 1986 GT) that I drive.

I do like the S6, but the "hatchback" and swooping style of that S7 just gets me...

    :
I went with the pearl white on the V3 and love it. On the V2 or V3, watch for bumpers being a slightly different shade but thankfully mine was a good match. If you lean towards the SS, def get a 15+ as those have the mag ride which would be a bonus over the G8 along with the better interior etc.

    You misspelled RS7.

And don't forget about Ziggy transporting cars for the price of fuel! My closing is tentatively scheduled for August 20th--could be sooner--so I should have plenty of free time and no anchor.

LOL, I have looked at the RS7 as well, but finding one in my price range that's not higher mileage is tough. I'm hoping that perhaps next Spring (when prices should cool off), I might be able to find one.

The audi S6 and s7 have the DCT which can be very spendy to repair. The A8, S8 and RS7 all have the much sturdier ZF-8 speed. Something to consider.

A8, S7 and S6 all have virtually the same motor with higher compression.

The S8 and RS7 on the other hand have forged rotating assemblies and lower compression motor with much larger turbos, if you're into that kinda thing.

Just in time for people to finally start learning FCA, we are now STLA haha.

Actually even though I live in motor city almost no one knew what FCA was, I just have to say I work for Chrysler for anyone to understand.

I had that thought too. A guy I used to work with had an older 550 and it was a 6 speed. He loved it, it was basically the M5 without the badging.

SS isn't really bang for the buck right now, and I say that as an SS owner, because the values are going through the roof especially a stick car. My auto has 42k miles and is worth at least what I paid for it new with the 20% discount 5 years ago ($40k). Its a great car but coming out of a G8 I think you'd get deja vu so for your money something fresh would probably be better.

    V would be pretty sweet.

Since you're in OH, maybe if you can hold out a couple months see if prices drop as winter gets closer since it's hard to sell a performance car once the snow rolls in.

Yeah there is one near me, 2017 SS, 6K miles and they want $49K for it. They were that new back in 2017 and it's not even a 6 speed...

At 40 I would go M5 all day. When I was 30, I'd probably say the Caddy.

I guess I’d say the CTSV, but an SS with a blower is a badass car too, and you’d have a lower mile car.

I would think for $50k used a Hellcat would be a better solution (although would imagine impossible to find for that price in crazy used market)

    Caddy CST-V.

Chevy SS is cool, but similar to your G8.
No chance in hell I'd ever buy a used Audi out of warranty.
BMW M5 would probably be second choice. Probably going to cost more to fix anything than the Caddy, but won't be a POS Audi.

You could get them used all day in the 40's pre-covid madness.
Now you're lucky to find a used Hellcat under 60k. I have seen several of them sell for $60k-64k with 20-30k miles on them

Why the Audi hate? I'm genuinely curious. Everyone I've talked to so far has said that any out of warranty Audi / BMW / Mercedes is pretty much the same thing. It's going to cost you a lot to fix, if something happens, but no one seemed to think one was better or worse than the other.

I'd probably give a nod to a used Audi over a used BMW or Benz simply because they share engineering with a lesser but fairly reliable brand (VW).

Just word of mouth I guess. From what I've heard over the years, BMW is more manageable to work on yourself, and is therefore easier to service for a shop, thus less expensive. Mercedes is expensive to work on, and Audi is as well, but is less reliable as BMW or Merc. Basically Audi is the Dodge of German cars.

Mercedes is expensive to work on, and Audi is as well, but is less reliable as BMW or Merc. Basically Audi is the Dodge of German cars.
That's a great comparison, thanks. The Dodge of German cars. I've often wondered that, because Audi to me always took a back seat to the other two. But over the last 10 years or so, their cars have gotten so much better looking, in my opinion. To the point where I really notice them, even more so than the MB and BMW.

Right now I am leaning towards the CTS-V, and that's mostly due to the bang for the buck factor, and the possible repair costs being cheaper than the others.

I don't think I'd ever buy a VW or Audi... but good to know they are the German Dodge... no way I'd buy an American Dodge.

Modern Germans. Making machinery ridiculously more complicated and expensive than it needs to be.

And they started out with such beautiful simplicity……

Overall I really do think theyre cool cars. I just can’t past that they’re such nose heavy pigs that really aren’t all that fast. And then add on the maintenance and reliability

If you want to get technical/literal, then Opel would be the German Dodge.

I think the stock exhaust sounds better.
