I've never been a huge 911 guy... while I like them, for the money, I would have opted for something different. However, I'm starting to like them more and more thanks to this thread.

I always appreciated the motorsport heritage, but I did not really understand them until getting exposed to them. They are unique, and so well built.

Are they so well built? They seem to be consistent w/ other German brands... likely to break and repairs will be expensive.

Not knocking them... just the feeling I've gotten about them.

In semi-related news I just read the Taycan has surpassed the 911 in sales.

This doesn't seem surprising to me. It's a more practical car with a premium badge on the hood.

I should clarify that I'm more interested in older cars, and that's where the comparison comes from.

My 1979 has over 100K miles on it, with it being used at a track car for 18+ years now. They are, in general, very well engineered. Designed to be serviceable. Maybe it's an unfair comparison, but I think of unibody muscle cars that really show wear with use.

Agreed w/ the muscle cars and that's good to know. I should have taken that mindset w/ a grain of salt. Kinda like people who don't own Harley's will down Harley's w/ always leaking oil, etc... my dad has had 2 over the past 15 years and neither has given him any trouble. Porsches could be the same way.

The takeaway: Don't listen to people who haven't owned the thing they're putting down.

There's lots of things that impress me from an engineering perspective. Porsche started fully galvanizing the chassis in ~1978. The whole damn tub, not just parts. Rust is still possible, but it's so much less an issue compared to muscle cars.

The engine and transaxle come out from the bottom of the car, no picker needed, and the whole assembly is held in with essentially 4 bolts.

They oiling system is a dry sump. Sure, it uses damn near 3 gallons of oil.

The torsion bar suspension is comically effective for its antiquated design.

Yep. It's basically a 993 rebuilt from the ground up.

Just to clarify, that applies to the 996 generation and newer, so 996, 997, 991 and now 992. I don't think the 993 and below did it that way, though I may be wrong.

Order a GT3 Touring, drive it for 2-3 years and then sell it for the same price you bought it for?

The fact that the owner let the maintenance lack to the point where it had a 21k$ repair bill is an instant pass.

I'm not sure if this a good deal, but just saw an 85 Targa with 64k miles for $60k on the Houston Porsche group. Car looks super clean.

That’s a nice looking ‘85. I’m guessing that the standard response about value is based on the maintenance records.

60K miles is low. That car does look clean from the few pictures.

That was probably a $45K car a couple years ago, so $60K doesn't sound too bananas given how expensive everything is right now.

I think that’s a really good deal. Targa lowers the price a bit, but it looks clean af. You should buy it.

I’m getting ready to head out to Cars and Coffee. I’ve never been, and I’m really looking forward to it. They have some awesome P-cars there

My dad has always been a 911 guy.

He has the money for one, but won’t spring for it.

He had a 2019 Vette z51/2LT for like a year, and then sold it.

What’s really funny is he encourages me in my vehicular wanderlust.

Have about 40k I can get out of the Rs5. So. I only need to justify somewhere between 30-60k.

Something about Targas I really don't like. Maybe the massive back window. It's an odd looking car.

Yea, the lines are off. I much prefer coupes. I’d still do a targa over a cab, though.

Yea, I’d prefer to stay at $100k. I could go over for the right car, but I really don’t think I need to to find something I’ll love.

I don't know what the actual value of this is, but I do know you should buy it regardless

I love those. Saw a couple today. It will probably go for close to double what I want to pay.

I have my eye on this. If it’s still hovering around ‘amazing deal’ territory when it closes, I may take a stab.

But probably not. The more I look, the more I keep coming back to the 993.

Going off of this thread, that’s been my favorite too. I saw an article that said it was the prettiest 911 and I think I agree. While there isn’t much changing when it comes to 911s, the 993 does seem damn near perfect to me.

I think a well sorted, clean 993 will be ideal. Holt’s wasn’t open Friday, but I got in touch with him and he’s going to give me a call Tuesday. I don’t really like red, so I think I’ll be waiting, but I’d love to see if he has anything in the pipeline. In the meantime, I’ll keep looking. But being able to buy locally is a huge, huge advantage for me.

Someone tell me why I shouldn’t consider a 360 Modena if I’m looking at a $100k budget. Only thing I can come up with is that it’s much flashier and draws more attention than a 993. Relatively reliable, relatively reasonable maintenance costs, gated shifter ().

Still strongly leaning 911, but it at least seems like it’s something worth considering.

Reasonable maintenance costs? Its night and day compared to a 911.
